Graeber debt the first 5000 years5/31/2023 Note: All the “Notes:” are my own additions and can be ignored if they don’t make sense. There were lots of surprising insights in his book, not the least of which is the way Graeber shows even the most capitalistic society is communistic at its roots. Graeber re-examines the last five thousands of years of history starting from this new view of debt: from the Sumerian King who grants loans to the farmers in return for their obedience to the modern capitalist system which forces laborers into debt as a way of forcing them to serve the system. Money was created a way to more easily track something that pre-existed it: debt.ĭebt, in fact, is the basis for society and the primary vehicle through which power is exercised. Graeber, an anthropologist, provides convincing evidence that story is completely wrong. Everyone that’s taken an economics class has heard the story about how money was created: people used to barter with each other but it got really inefficient because what if I wanted to trade my shoes for bread, but the baker didn’t need any new shoes so money was created to form a medium of exchange. An exquisite novel about a simple life, it has already demonstrated its power to move thousands of readers with a message of solace and truth. Like John Williams' Stoner or Denis Johnson's Train Dreams, A Whole Life is a tender book about finding dignity and beauty in solitude. He leaves his valley just once more, to fight in WWII - where he is taken prisoner in the Caucasus - and returns to find that modernity has reached his remote haven… When Marie dies in an avalanche, pregnant with their first child, Andreas' heart is broken. He said she said book kwame alexander5/31/2023 While nothing unexpected happens and social and economic problems are treated with a thoroughly romanticized glaze, style carries the day here: Alexander’s hip-hop narration, peppered with FB exchanges, emails, and text messages, is positively lyrical and, though the sexual content is clear and explicit, the language is cleaned up the way rap lyrics get cleaned up for radio play. This is pure and enjoyable urban rom-com: of course the protest is successful of course Claudia falls for T-Diddy of course T-Diddy gives up his playa ways (mostly) for Claudia of course Claudia and TDiddy both get their full scholarships of course there is a girl fight and of course a heated football rally means someone gets shot but not seriously hurt. Fortunately, T-Diddy lives with an uncle who has his own history of activism, so he is able to meet Claudia on her own ground, and he parlays his power as a leader on the field into the role of accidental community organizer, rallying the students of his high school into a successful protest of the budget cuts that threaten the school’s arts funding. When his eyes land on her tight jeans, his friends bet him $150 that he won’t be able to sweet talk her out of them, and the game is on. Omar T-Diddy Smalls is a hip-hop-spouting, football-playing superstar who scores as often off the field as on Claudia Clarke is a done-with-romance, Harvard-bound but still dishy activist and future journalist. |
