Tunnel of bones victoria schwab6/10/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() So what the heck is going on with Cassidy's best ghost friend Jacob? His reluctance to open up about his past and his thick head drive me mad at times, so I'm glad we finally learnt more about his back story. So I sit and read and wonder and I am always left craving more. She adds kindling to the fire, but she never burns it all. She is an expert at keeping the reader on edge. What I enjoy the most about Victoria's books is that she never gives you all the answers. As with many sequels, the stakes are higher, the enemy is stronger, and Tunnel of Bones is no exception. The Nightingale and the Rose, a short, elegant fable about the price of art and love (for Wilde, these were often synonyms) is a case in point. His short story collections, The Happy Prince and Other Stories and The House of Pomegranates, demonstrate his poise: he reins in an extravagance of metaphor and feeling with a dark wit and a dose of bitter realism. (The exception, of course, is The Ballad of Reading Gaol, with its notably starker diction.)Įven in his prose Wilde’s is a dangerous poetry, seductively theatrical in its rhythms, unafraid of risking the edge of self-parody.
